Celebrating International Women's Day with Tracey Ryan

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we are reminded of the extraordinary women who inspire us every day with their brilliance, confidence, and success.

Today, we are especially proud to celebrate Tracey Ryan, Aurecon's Chief Executive, in New Zealand. Tracey's leadership, dedication, and impact embody the spirit of this important day. Her achievements reflect the strength and resilience of women everywhere.

Happy International Women’s Day!

I grew up in rural Ireland in a small village, Cleariestown, near the coast in Wexford. My father was a land surveyor with Department of Agriculture who, despite never going to university himself, placed huge value on education and getting ahead. My mother was an Irish immigrant to New York (from Limerick) who returned to Wexford with my father (after a whirlwind romance following meeting in Gaelic Park in New York whilst my father was there on a GAA tour arranged through the local parish priest).

I studied at University College Galway, before moving to Birmingham to undertake my Masters in Hydrogeology. From there, I worked across Europe delivering infrastructure projects, through the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

I met my Kiwi husband at an Ireland vs All Blacks game in Landsdowne Road in 2001. He always had a desire to return home to New Zealand (after 10 years on his OE!!!); fortunately, the career opportunity came up for me through the company I was with at the time. We relocated here in 2008 with our eldest Niamh who was 5 months old at the time.

Moving to the other side of the world was challenging both personally and professionally. I’d only been to New Zealand three times on holiday before I moved (and only to the South Island).

In some ways, the personal aspect was even harder. Arriving here with a young family, without those support networks, I worked full-time and travelled a lot with my role, so wasn’t exposed to the coffee groups and school runs where many women meet.

I love it here, but as anyone expat knows, it remains tough.

The other aspect is the sense of belonging. I haven’t lived in Ireland for 30 years now, and even the Irish don’t think I am Irish anymore! But Kiwis see me as Irish, so it can be challenging for your sense of identity at times.

Something I really value about Ireland is that it has held on to its Celticism and leveraged that to help transform into a small, advanced economy. I see a lot of parallels for Aotearoa New Zealand with Māori culture and its emphasis on long term thinking and sustainability.

There are two pieces of advice I would give to my 21-year-old self: The first, to trust your instincts as they are usually right and the second is to remain true to yourself – it's ok to be your authentic self (you are good enough).

A Celtic Christmas

A Quiet Love is an intimate and moving film that follows three Deaf couple as they share their extraordinary love stories, through sign language: a decades-long forbidden romance across a religious divide, an LGBTQI+ couple navigating parenthood with Deaf and hearing children, and a Deaf boxer and his hearing partner facing a life-altering choice. A cinematic celebration of resilience, connection, and enduring love; featuring an immersive soundscape, A Quiet Love offers a beautiful insight into the world of Irish Deaf people. It is Ireland’s first feature film in Irish Sign Language, produced by a Deaf and hearing team and directed by award-winning filmmaker Garry Keane (In the Shadow of Beirut).

2025 Winner Rose of Tralee

2025 New Rose of Tralee Winner

Wellington’s Ciara Jo Hanlon took out the title at the end of the weekend at the Rose Ball held at the Addington Events Centre.

Hanlon said, “It means the world to both me and my family. The Rose of Tralee is something I’ve watched since I was a kid and way back then I made a promise that one day I’d give it a go. When I heard my name called out last night I was in disbelief. I’d love to go back to younger me and tell her the rollercoaster and wonderful life that was ahead of her.”

What made the event even more special was that the 2024 International Rose of Tralee, who is also the 2024 NZ Rose – Christchurch local Keely O’Grady, was home from Ireland for the transfer of the NZ title.

O’Grady said, “Handing over the NZ Rose sash to Ciara Jo was such a surreal and emotional moment. On one hand, I felt this immense pride reflecting on the year that had been, representing NZ, the values and spirit of our Kiwi culture and Irish diaspora on the international stage. And on the other hand, I was just so excited to pass the torch to someone like CJ who is so vibrant, and genuine.”

Sarah Rowe , Ballina, Co Mayo will tour New Zealand to celebrate St Brigid's day 2024.

Sarah is s a triple code sportswoman. She is a former Republic of Ireland women's association football international . In addition to association football, Sarah has also played two other football codes at a senior level. She has played ladies' Gaelic football for Mayo and women's Australian rules football for Collingwood in the AFLW . At club level, Rowe has played association football for Castlebar Celtic , Raheny United , Shelbourne , Bohemians in the Women's National League and for Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women . Rowe was a member of the Republic of Ireland U19 team that won their group at the 2014 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship and qualified for the semi-finals. In 2016, she was also a member of the Shelbourne Ladies team that won a Women's National League/ FAI Women's Cup double. In 2023, she returned to association football briefly playing for Melbourne Victory and then for Bohemians.

New National Coordinator for FOI/The Tara Trust

The Friends of Ireland/The Tara Trust would like to thank Karen Manning for her role as the National Coordinator, Karen decided to step down at the end of her contract in March due to other work and family commitments. from the role. We wish her all the best for the future.

We are thrilled to announce that Jane Quinn will take up the role of National Coordinator along with offering support to the Embassy of Ireland New Zealand where needed, this is effective immediately.

Jane recently stood down from her role as President of the Auckland Irish C lub, Jane was a trustee for the St Patrick's Festival NZ and was also on the board at the IBNNZ in Auckland for many years. Jane brings a set of skills required to raise the profile of the The Tara Trust and to increase the awareness of the Tara Trust in NZ.

Fundraising for The Tara Trust will be a large part of Jane's role and we hope you support all the initiative's that Jane puts forward to raise funds for the trust to ensure Irish arts, culture and welfare of the Irish diaspora is maintained in New Zealand.

His Excellency, Mr. Trevor Mallard, Ambassador of New Zealand presented his Letters of Credence to President Michael D. Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin today and was accompanied by his spouse, Ms. Jane Clifton, grandchildren, Lucy Mallard, Patrick Mallard, Anna Mallard and Mr. Ernest Stokes, Second Secretary.

Mr. Neale Richmond T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment with special responsibility for Employment Affairs and Retail Business; and the Department of Social Protection, represented the Government at the ceremony.

The following were also present: Ms. Orla O’Hanrahan, Secretary General to the President; Mr. Colm Ó Floinn, Assistant Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Paul Kavanagh, Chief of Protocol, Department of Foreign Affairs; Col. Stephen Howard, Comdt. Brian Walsh, Capt Austin Doyle and Comdt. Deirdre Newel, Aides-de-Camp to the President; Mr. Joe Brennan and Ms. Louisa Heneghan, Protocol, Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Ambassador was accompanied to and from Áras an Uachtaráin by an Escort of Honour consisting of a motorcycle detachment drawn from the 2 Brigade Cavalry Squadron, Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin, under the command of Lieutenant Tadhg Campbell.

A Guard of Honour was provided at Áras an Uachtaráin by the 12th Infantry Battalion, Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick under the command of Lieutenant Caelen Murphy.

Lieutenant Mark McGirr from the 12th Infantry Battalion was the flag officer.

Captain Ben Jacob conducted the Army No 1 Band which is based in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin.

My name is Jane Connolly and I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed as Ambassador of Ireland to New Zealand.

Ireland and New Zealand are very fortunate to enjoy special ties of kinship and history built on the rich contribution of generations of Irish women and men to the development of New Zealand and the influence of the many New Zealanders who have made Ireland their home.

We also share many values, as reflected in our commitment to advance fundamental freedoms, human rights, the rule of law and multilateralism.

We are both to be found in the frontline of global efforts on disarmament, peacekeeping and assistance to our partner developing countries.

And, while we are competitors on the rugby field but even there our close ties have made it a rivalry of deep mutual respect bound by a connection and bond forged over many generations.

I look forward during my time as Ambassador to New Zealand to working closely with the many Irish community, business, cultural and sporting organisations that we are so lucky to have here and with the State Agencies and other colleagues to contribute to the further development of the deep ties between our two nations.

Wellington/Hutt Valley women's footballers win Australasian State Games

Wellington/Hutt Valley women's footballers created history in Melbourne on Saturday 1 October when they won the Australasian State Games intermediate tournament, defeating South Australia 8-9 (33) to 3-11 (20) in a cracking final.

It's an absolutely amazing achievement from a fantastic group of players. Wellington/Hutt Valley have competed at the games on and off since 1988 and this is their first piece of silverware at the tournament in those 34 years. You can read a full round-up of the tournament here .

While it took 14 stars to bring home the silverware from the tournament, the team did have a few standout performers who picked up tournament All-Star awards at Saturday's gala ball: Heather Williamson; Mairéad Bogue; Jennifer Downey; Eilís Ní Chaiside; Aisling King; Andrea O'Reilly; and Tiaré Verenitani. Well done to each of you. And a special shout-out to Andrea O'Reilly who duly won player of the tournament after some outstanding performances over the three days.

The team's success would not have been possible without the support they had before and during the tournament. Big thanks to tournament team assistants Kevin Brannigan and Sam Bircham, and to Sam for his great snaps of the games. And a big bualadh bos to the top-class coaching duo of Davey Rynne and Ronan O'Malley who trained the team in the lead-up to the tournament and who clearly had them in fine fettle and playing some brilliant football.

It's also fair to say that this success has been years in the making – so thank you to all the players and coaches who have gone before. The work and committment you each put in over the years has undoubtedly contributed to this victory.

The Tara Trust - National Coordinator Appointed

Following an invitation to tender process in December 2021, The Tara Trust has appointed Karen Manning as their national coordinator. Born in Dublin Karen has lived in Aotearoa with her family since 2012 and recently became a New Zealand citizen. Karen is co-owner of the Dubliner, Irish Bar & Restaurant located in Mid-Canterbury and is passionate about all things Irish. She has attended multiple Friends of Ireland and Irish Business Network (IBNNZ) events and has previously been involved in adjudicating for the Canterbury Rose of Tralee selection. Karen will be supported in the role by Rí Rá Events, an event management company based in Canterbury.

“We’re delighted to announce that Karen Manning has been appointed to this role. The Tara Trust is looking forward to supporting our existing groups and delivering a number of exciting projects during the year". Niamh McMahon, Chair of the Tara Trust and Honorary Consul General of Ireland Auckland.

Karen will be tasked with promoting Irish arts, culture, welfare and projects and will work to connect with existing groups and the Embassy of Ireland to identify opportunities to promote Irish heritage to the wider New Zealand public as well as with Irish born and those of Irish descent. The coordinator will be available to work with all groups to support the promotion of any activities and events that promote the Irish community and/or Ireland.

To enable this project to reach the widest possible audience including members of the diaspora who are not associated with any existing organisations, The Tara Trust will now manage and leverage the digital channels and audience of the Friends of Ireland project.

About The Tara Trust
The Tara Trust exists to support the Irish Community in New Zealand through its support of Irish arts, culture and the welfare of the Irish diaspora. It’s trustees are Niamh McMahon, Rodney Walshe and Caolan Keegan.

During the last 2 years, the trust has supported a number of Irish citizens with welfare support as well as being involved in the publication of a number of cultural projects.

Minister Colm Brophy discusses global issues with 150 youth representatives

Minister of State for Overseas Development and the Diaspora, Colm Brophy TD, today met 150 youth representatives to discuss how to build better public engagement on issues of global importance such as climate change, poverty, hunger, inequality and injustice.

This online event was one of three public meetings led by the Minister as part of an effort to develop a new Irish Aid strategy for Development Education and Global Citizenship.

Minister Brophy said:

“The pandemic has been a terrible reminder of how inter-connected our lives are, no matter where on the planet we live. Irish Aid can support public discussion of the big issues that affect us all, such as climate change, global inequality, hunger and injustice. I want us to learn from the valuable observations and inputs from today’s discussion, so that Irish Aid can work with Irish people on the issues that will shape our future.

“The experience of the last year tells me that we should revisit how Irish Aid engages with people of all ages and all backgrounds, learning from the way education – formal and informal – has adapted to the pandemic, and how each of us has changed how we receive and share information.

“Irish Aid already works through schools, colleges and adult, youth and community groups, but I’m conscious we can do more, connecting with a broader audience and bringing them into this conversation.”

Today’s event was organised in cooperation with the National Youth Council of Ireland and participants advised the Minister on how Irish Aid can reach a younger audience. Discussions focused on identifying the issues of most importance to younger people and on how Government can best communicate with them.

A previous online Town Hall took place on 31 March, with a third planned for 21 April.

Mary Cunningham, CEO of the National Youth Council said:

“Younger people are very conscious that they are global citizens. They think and communicate about these issues in ways that are different from previous generations.

“If Irish Aid’s work in this area is to be effective it needs to connect with the reality of how young people form their views. Today’s meeting was an important step in that direction. It was a good opportunity to set out the important issues and give some advice on how best to communicate.”

The new strategy is due to be finalised in mid-2021.

Irish Minister elected President of Eurogroup

Welcome news of the election of Paschal Donoghue, Irish Minister of Finance, as President of the Eurogroup, the coordinating body of 19 Eurozone counterparts. The 18 month term will begin on 13 July.

In his statement following the election, Minister Donohue said "The Eurogroup is the economic engine for the Eurozone and the single currency. My immediate priority, as president, will be to chart a common way forward on building the European recovery, strengthening the eurozone economy, and promoting sustainable and inclusive growth for member states and their citizens. Across the EU our citizens are looking to us to provide the necessary leadership.

As President, I will seek to build bridges amongst all members of the euro area, and to engage actively with all member states, to ensure that we have a consensus-based approach to the recovery of our economies and our societies.

I will bring to the table Ireland's experience as a small member state that has been a programme country but which has also seen its economy and society transformed through EU membership. I look forward to working closely with my counterparts to ensure an inclusive and transparent Eurogroup, that delivers economic recovery, prosperity and jobs in the best interest of Europe and its citizens”.

ESR Board Chair Denise Church today announced the appointment of Peter Lennox, the current Chief Executive at MetService, as ESR’s next Chief Executive. He will take up this role in September 2020.

“We are very pleased to welcome Peter Lennox as our next Chief Executive. Peter is well equipped to lead ESR, bringing a balanced blend of commercial and scientific disciplines to the role. He has wide ranging experience in science, technology and commercialisation, including many years’ experience working in the global biotechnology and meteorology sectors.”

“ESR is at a pivotal stage of its development. We are a relatively small science organisation that punches above our weight, delivering world-leading science solutions to support the forensic, health and environment sectors, and playing a vital role in informing New Zealand’s response to public health challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Peter’s experience leading MetService to science and commercial success is highly relevant to our next steps.”

Mr Lennox emigrated from Scotland in 2003 to take up the post of Industry New Zealand’s biotechnology sector director. He went on to lead the transformation of New Zealand Trade & Enterprise’s Beachheads Programme, raising the profile of New Zealand technology sectors and collaborating with key investors to stimulate investment in new ideas.

He joined MetService as Chief Executive in 2011. Under his leadership, it has become one of New Zealand’s most successful State-Owned Enterprises, advancing its scientific expertise while developing one of the country’s best blue-chip customer lists. He is currently New Zealand’s designated Permanent Representative with the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

ESR is New Zealand’s Crown Research Institute specialising in science for communities.

ESR uses world-leading science to safeguard our health, keep our communities safer, protect our food-based economy, and improve the health of our water and natural environment.

Peter succeeds Dr Keith McLea, who steps down in July after leading ESR through a six-year period of turnaround and renewal.

Mr Lennox says, “I am primed and very excited about the prospect of leading ESR’s contribution to New Zealand. I’m looking forward to taking on the next stage of ESR’s transformation, building on the strong foundations established by the current Chief Executive Keith McLea.”

Dublin, Cork and Belfast have attained top ten ranking in Global Outlook's recent Tech Cities of The Future report.

Dublin, places third in the overall study. The city ranked second in the Economic Potential category, with Ireland excelling in various country level data points, including the 2020 Index of Economic Freedom. Dublin also shone in the FDI Performance
category, with the highest level of capital investment in software R&D out of all locations analysed.

Ireland wins seat on United Nations Security Council

Ireland this evening was elected to the United Nations Security Council and will now take a seat on the 15- member body in 2021 and 2022. Ireland campaigned on the themes of Partnership, Empathy and Independence as the key attributes that our country brings to its engagement with the UN and which will drive our work on the Security Council.

Speaking after the result was announced in New York, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said:

“This is a day on which we can all be proud. We have experienced a very difficult three months as a nation as we isolated ourselves from friends, family, work and travel. However, today’s victory underpins Ireland’s place in the world; as a global island, with a clear and tangible ambition to play a central role in contributing to international peace and security. We look forward to working with our partners in the international community from all around the world to promote our shared values of peace, justice, and human rights”.

“We will do our utmost to make our two years on the Council as constructive and as effective as we can, acting as a voice for all who champion the peaceful resolution of conflict and addressing the drivers of conflict, drawing on the experiences we have gained from peacebuilding in our own part of the world.”

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney TD said:

“This is a fantastic result for Ireland in what was a very tough contest between competitors who are friends, supporters of the United Nations system and who share many of the same values and principles.

“I believe that today’s result is a clear indication of Ireland’s standing internationally. This comes from almost 65 years of UN membership and a steadfast commitment to building peace and investing in conflict prevention. There has not been a day since 1958 when Irish peacekeepers did not serve under the UN Blue Flag. For this and many other reasons, the members of the UN have honoured Ireland by placing their trust in us to take a seat at the Security Council and to do our best to further the objectives of peace, conflict resolution and security for all of citizens of all the UN Member States. We will not betray that trust”

The Tánaiste added: “I would like to pay tribute to so many whose support has led to today’s success, in particular, to the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, who has played a key role. But this campaign has been supported right across the political spectrum, as well as by NGOs and civil society and I would like to thank all for that. A special thank you to former President Mary Robinson. Also to Bono, and John McColgan who extended all the help they could in helping us promote our campaign for election. The welfare fund for those in need

The ‘Friends of Ireland Welfare Fund’, is a mechanism in partnership with the Embassy of Ireland in New Zealand and a number of Irish Societies and Community Organisations.

The aim of the fund is to assist Irish people in Aotearoa New Zealand with limited or no capacity to pay for necessary goods and services with respect, compassion and sensitivity. For the purposes of this policy, Irish people are defined as any individual who has an Irish passport.

The Fund will have an assessment process which all clients must comply with. Financial assistance will be short-term crisis payments only.

Stuff CEO Sinead Boucher buys the company, announces 'great new era'

Bold, brave and positive are some of the words being used to describe a management buyout of Stuff by the company's chief executive Sinead Boucher.

Boucher has bought Stuff from its Australian owners Nine Entertainment for $1, ending months of speculation about a potential takeover.

She has signalled plans to develop an ownership model that would give staff a shareholding stake in the business.

Broadcasting Minister Kris Faafoi said the deal "maintains plurality and competition in New Zealand's news media, as well as making Stuff New Zealand-owned again".

"This is a bold move by Sinead and demonstrates her passion and commitment, both as a journalist and as chief executive of Stuff," he said.

There is speculation that bringing Stuff back into local ownership could make it more politically-palatable for the Government to put together a more comprehensive package of aid for the media sector that included Stuff.

Irish Aid ‘walks the talk’, says OECD

The OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) today published its latest peer review of Irish Aid, Ireland’s international development programme.

The report finds Irish international development to be “strong, with many areas of excellence”, saying that Ireland “walks the talk” in prioritising the furthest behind and is “a leading advocate for multilateralism.” The report says that the clear focus of Irish Aid enables Ireland to “exercise leadership and make a visible difference.”

Welcoming the report, the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney T.D. said:

“I am pleased that the OECD report recognises the excellence of Irish Aid, Ireland’s international development programme. The report shows that, though we may be small, Ireland is a country that does things right.

COVID-19 reminds us just how interconnected our planet is and how we have to work together to resolve challenges. An effective multilateral system is central to that response and, more generally, is in Ireland’s interest. I was delighted to see the OECD recognise how the Irish Aid programme helps Ireland play a leading, constructive global role advocating for multilateralism and for poverty reduction, channelling our assistance to where it is needed most and making a visible difference.”

Ciarán Cannon T.D., Minister for International Development and the Diaspora, added:

“Irish citizens can be extremely proud of our international development programme, which is helping transform people’s lives around the world. Partnership is at the heart of Ireland’s approach, something highlighted by the OECD when it looked Ireland’s at partnership with Ethiopia.

Civil society organisations play a central role in the delivery of Ireland’s international programme and I was delighted that the OECD highlighted the strength of Irish Aid’s partnership with civil society.”

Ireland supports international Covid-19 response

The Tánaiste, Simon Coveney, T.D., today announced further Irish support for the international Covid-19 response.

The Tánaiste said:

“Today Ireland has made an additional €1 million available to the WHO’s programme of assistance to combat Covid-19 in Ethiopia, building on our long term support for the healthcare system in the country. This brings to €11.5 million, Ireland’s support for the UN Covid-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan.

“At today’s Alliance for Multilateralism meeting, I discussed with other Foreign Ministers the importance of a strong, coordinated international response to the collective challenge posed by Covid-19, in particular the threats posed to developing countries, those in conflict, those whose health systems are weak, and those coping with refugees and displaced persons. We were all very conscious that those problems were our problems, as Covid-19 knows no borders.
