International Women's day with Friends of Ireland

March 5, 2021

On the 7th of March, The Embassy of Ireland in Aotearoa New Zealand will be celebrating International Women's Day.

To mark International Women’s Day, the Embassy of Ireland in Aotearoa, in collaboration with the Embassy of Ireland Youth Council, invite you to join them for a virtual gathering on Sunday 7th March at 7–8pm.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women and girls and reflect on issues which continue to prevent us from achieving real and lasting gender equality. In an age of campaigning for social justice, often spearheaded by younger generations, we will hear from a number of incredibly inspiring women and will ask how we can all collectively support the younger generation in support of social change.

“I was elected by the women of Ireland, who instead of rocking the cradle, rocked the system.”

Finishing our celebration of St Brigid's Day. We finish celebrating St Brigid's Day with our last exceptional woman. Thank you to all the women who kindly allowed us to profile them and their achievements in NZ. In collaboration with IBNNZ, St Patrick's Festival NZ, Embassy of Ireland New Zealand, and Mná na hÉireann we will be celebrating exceptional women in NZ. Brigid is the patron saint of poets. But that’s not all – she’s also the patron saint of midwives, newborns, Irish nuns, fugitives, blacksmiths, dairymaids, boatmen, chicken farmers, cattle, scholars, sailors, and no doubt many more. She is also, along with Patrick and Columcille, one of the three patron saints of Ireland. 1st of February - also marks the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
